Racing Categories

Competition categories for our race series are divided into 5 classes

1.5-2.5km

Mini Lamb

Mini Lamb is the beginner’s class and will consist of young beginner riders experiencing mountain biking for the first time. It will be assumed that these riders possess little to no technical riding skills and therefore course selection will consist of VERY easy terrain and short distances at all venues.

Approximately 15 minutes average race time

1.5-3.5km

Lambateur

Lambateur is the first step up from our Mini Lamb beginner’s class and consists of young riders who are ready to challenge themselves with trails outside of the Kinsmen park field area. It will be assumed that these riders possess the necessary skills to ride green level single track and blue level double track trails. All lambateur racers follow a lead rider throughout the course but it is highly recommended that the racers pre-ride the course ahead of time.

Approximately 10-25 minutes average race time depending on the strength of the rider

5-7km

Sport

Sport is the first true rider’s class and will assume that riders have at least a moderate experience level. Trails will be designed to challenge, but promote growth as a rider. Technical level will be easy to moderate, and distance will be short to moderate in length. Sport is broken down into both an under 19 category and an over 19 category with separate podiums at the end of the race.

Approximately 30 minutes average race time

11-13km

Advanced

Advanced level will be the first full length course. Advanced riders are expected to be completely competent and experienced in all skills pertaining to mountain biking or be willing to accept all challenges and have the common sense to judge their own trail skills accordingly. They should feel comfortable riding all difficulty levels of terrain and/or possess the needed skills to judge obstacles for themselves. Race distances will be moderate to long in length.

Approximately 50 minutes average race time

17-20km

Elite

Elite is the top class and consists of riders either competing at the O-Cup level or looking to challenge themselves against top riders. The terrain will be similar to the Advanced level, but the distances will be longer.

Approximately 1 hour 5 minutes average race time

Points Accumulation

  • Best 5 of 8 races count towards the season total (points breakdown: 1st = 25, 2nd = 22, 3rd = 20, 4th = 18, etc…)
  • Points gained in Short Track are added to the season total (if a short track is held during the year)
    • Short Track placings are worth half the points of an XC race (including TT) (i.e. 1st = 13, 2nd = 11, 3rd = 10, 4th = 9, etc.)
  • Minimum four XC race finishes required to be considered for season overall

Tie break rules

Riders that finish the season tied in overall points will have their placement determined by the following order:

  1. Rider with the greatest total points in head to head races during the season
  2. Rider who had the best finish in the most recent head to head race
  3. If both riders never competed in a race together during the season then their most recent races will be dropped sequentially until the tie is broken

Race Results and Points

In order to qualify for the season standings, a rider must compete in at least 4 of the 7 races. The final results will consist of the rider’s top 5 finishes for the year. Points for individual races will be awarded based on a rider’s place within the overall category for that race (Lambateur, Sport, Advanced and Elite) and their gender.

Once a rider has completed two races in one category, they will not be allowed to switch again.
