Blacksheep Trail Development and Maintenance Manager Trails

Thunder Bay, ON, Canada $16,000-$25,000.00
 

Position Summary:

The Trail Development and Maintenance Director will aid in all aspects of the “Tourist Grant” as well as oversee the maintenance of existing trails, winter fat bike grooming program, and future grants/sponsorship opportunities related to trails. The Trail Development and Maintenance Manager will report to the BOD and assist the Executive Director. The position is year-round and the work schedule varies throughout the year based on needs.  Candidates should have the ability to work flexible hours.   
 

Key Responsibilities(including but not limited to):

  • Manage the Tourist Grant including but not limited to the hiring and managing of staff, issuing of contracts for trail development, oversee trail equipment purchases, as well as ensuring compliance of all environment and public relation concerns. 
  • Recruit and hire trails staff, including Trail Crew Leader/Operator, Seasonal Trail Crew Labour.
  • Supervise all staff and contractors.
  • Assist with Blacksheep Trail Director to ensure smooth operation of volunteer work programs including trail stewards, volunteer work days, and winter
    grooming.
  • Assist the Trail Director and Sponsorship Director in regards to the TAPs program to ensure that expectations are met.
  • Engage with and maintain positive relationships with land managers.
  • Work with Blacksheep Trail Committee, BOD, and ED to assess and analyze trail maintenance needs and develop annual project list and work plan.
  • Deploy and monitor trail counters and perform data analysis.
  • Support and supplement winter biking efforts including trail grooming, equipment mobilization, and equipment repair and maintenance.
  • Aid in signage production, installation, maintenance, and updates of all Blacksheep trail, trailhead, and highway signage.
  • Aid in map updates and revisions.
  • Help Develop Blacksheep annual trails budget.
  • Provide input and work with ED and BOD on grants and other funding opportunities.
  • Assess and procure all supplies and materials for trail work season.
  • Help  procuring new equipment as necessary.
  • Perform field work on an occasional basis.
  • Support trail related aspects of all Blacksheep events.
  • Maintain and update website trail conditions.
  • Oversee trail related apps such as trailbot and trailforks.
  • Work with the communications committee on content for website, social media, and monthly newsletter.
Qualifications:

A successful candidate shall have the following qualities or willingness to learn them

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and written & oral communication skills to connect with contractors, staff, and volunteers
  • Good organizational and time management skills to keep projects on track
  • Strong ethical standards and personal integrity 
  • Ability to work in a team environment, with a diverse group of people
  • A high level of aptitude, self-motivation, resourcefulness, and ability to work independently without direct supervision
  • Previous leadership and supervisory experience.
  • Proficient in computer programs such as word, excel, google drive, etc
  • A good basic level of fitness and mountain biking ability
  • Thorough familiarity with all Blacksheep MTB Club Trails
  • A keen understanding of trail development processes and standards including but not limited to IMBA, Whistler Standards.
  • A clear understanding of grant claim procedures.
  • Processes related to working on city land
  • A valid drivers licence
