It got the final nail in the coffin.
The scheduled “final” DH race of the year, for Wednesday Sept. 17th, has been cancelled, with no possibility for rescheduling.
We’ve been struggling all years to find people to run a DH series. Liam Heney, your DH director, did his best, but there’s a few things that set us back this year:
- The weather wasn’t in our favour. The early summer, where everyone has the motivation to build, was abnormally rainy. That hill doesn’t dry out for months after the snow melts, so those who did build got off to a late start
- Manpower. This was huge. We’re in a position with our XC races that we can run a full race with only 5 volunteers if need be, but the same can’t be said for DH… especially when there aren’t many DH trails to ride to begin with, and those trails require the same, if not a higher, level of maintenance than our beloved trails in Shuniah Mines. Trail construction is huge, but almost as important is low turnout for help to put off the series. Even with trails, you need a healthy dosage of volunteers for timing, marshalling, flagging, and registration, that we just didn’t have this year
- The reality is that our board of exec and rider base primarily consists of trail/XC riders. With a bigger rider base, it’d be easier and more practical for us to justify stretching our limited resources over to the mountain.
It remains to be seen whether or not we will offer a season in following years. We strongly encourage anyone considering getting involved in DH to contact us.
We’ve made posts asking for more volunteers. We hated the thought of having to lessen club functionality, and we feel even worse having to cancel an entire DH season because of it.
We would like to thank the individuals that stepped up to the plate to try and get this season going, and we hope that more people like you will come soon.
If you’ve got any questions, we’d be more than happy to answer them.
